At our last Men’s retreat, after an evening meeting, my friend Daniel pointed to something on my chest and said, I assume that has some sort of meaning. I looked down and the necklace I usually wear under my shirt was hanging outside my T-shirt. Yes, it does, I told him. I was just surprised to see you wearing it, he said. Daniel is a flamboyant younger man given to bright clothes and a theatrical style of speaking, so I’m sure he sees me as a rather staid old fellow. We here on Bud’s Blog know better. The small pendant has meaning for several reasons. For one, I bought it at a small mineral and jewelery store in Newport, Rhode Island at a time when I had committed to certain positive changes in my life and I’ve worn it ever since as a reminder of that commitment. But it is also made of my favorite mineral, rutilated quartz. Yes, I’m a geek. I have a favorite mineral.
Quartz is one of the most common minerals on earth, a fact that doesn’t make it any less beautiful in its unrutilated form, and rutile is the main ore for titanium. Rutile often forms needle-like, reddish gold crystals inside quartz, producing rutilated quartz. The beauty of this mineral cocktail makes it valued as a semi-precious gemstone in jewelery. I also have a beautiful specimen given to me by my son that I keep on my bed stand. I suppose it shouldn’t surprise me that, like most minerals and crystals, New Age types attribute certain benefits to wearing rutilated quartz. According to crystalsandjewelery.com, Intuitive sources (don’t we all want them) say that it assists with mental focus. It is also said to attract love and stabilize relationships. It is reputed to diminish fears and be excellent at assisting with decision-making processes. It is said that it can also ease loneliness and relieve guilt thereby bringing happiness. Rutilated quartz said to be particularly effective for getting things moving energetically. It can help slowed chakras return to normal spin and balance.
Wow! Beautiful to look at, personal meaning AND balanced, normally spinning chakras. I guess I’ll keep wearing it.
