Monday Smiles – 7/9/2012

Muri and  I have attended a lot of theater … from Cyrano de Bergerac at the Ahmanson Theater to Le Mis at the Pantages and Side by Side by Sondheim at South Coast Repertory.   Sometimes we went with friends, others it was just the two of us … dates and double dates.   And over a span of about thirty years, Saturday night was theater night.   Since most productions start at 7:30 or 8:00, we’d go out for an early dinner, always with a reservation since we couldn’t afford the time to wait for a table.  We’d tell the waiter, We have theater tickets so we need to hurry.   We were never late but we were always a little rushed.  We considered it the price of being theater lovers.

Then one weekend a couple years ago, our friends, Ron and Kerry, couldn’t make the date on our tickets.  It wasn’t the first time we’d exchanged our tickets for another date but it was the first time we couldn’t get tickets on another Saturday night.  So, we settled for a Sunday matinee.   We got money back in the exchange.   The audience was about a decade older and a bit less dressed up.   But the play was good and the older audience appreciative.   Afterwards, we drove to the usually crowded Rusty Pelican restaurant and were seated promptly … without reservations, and we took our time, visiting with our friends over drinks, dinner, coffee and dessert.  It was great.   So now, if we have choice, we are Sunday afternoon theater goers.  You can indeed teach an old curmudgeon and his wife new tricks.

Yesterday afternoon?  We saw The Marvelous Wonderettes – Cap and Gown, with Ron and Kerry at the Laguna Playhouse.  It was a lighthearted musical production featuring fifty or so rock and roll songs from the fifties and sixties woven into a tale of a high school singing girl group.

It won’t change our lives but it was cute and funny.  Afterwards, we adjourned to J.T. Schmid Restaurant and Brewery for dinner, where we ate until stuffed and talked until talked out.  Theater, food and friends.   It’s Monday … I’m smiling.
