Holiday Commercials

lexusFor three years, it has been traditional here on Older Eyes – Bud’s Blog to choose a Worst Commercial of the Holiday Season.   There was the infamous Lexus with a Big Red Bow for Christmas.   There was Best Buy’s mean spirited Game On Santa commercial in which Materialistic Mom beats Santa to the stockings because the gifts he brings aren’t good enough then makes fun of the Old Guy.  Delightful.   And Audi, not to be outdone by Lexus, offered A New Holiday Tradition, that of parents stealing their son’s new car when he comes to visit for the holidays.  Audi was so pleased with that little gem that they brought it back for 2012.  Mercedes has joined the fun by sending their Santa out in a red Mercedes convertible led by twelve silver Mercedes.  Let’s see … When what to my wondering eyes should appear, but a miniature SL550 and eight tiny SL63 AMGs.  Lacks a certain charm, don’t you think?

Of course, some holiday commercials manage to sell a product without selling out the spirit of the season and this year, I thought I’d feature a few of those.  For years, Coca-Cola has treated us to genuine Christmas images that just happen to feature people … or Santa or happy polar bears … drinking Coke.  This year’s Together We Make the Magic Happen is a good example:

This ad by L.L. Bean for their Trailblazer Headlamp brings their product to life by utilizing children waiting up to see Santa arrive.

And sometimes, an advertiser like retailer John Lewis decides to create something special for the season that is more a video Christmas card than a commercial.

TSTSo, here on Top Sites Tuesday #181, I’ll offer these thoughts.  One: During the holidays, it’s easy … and sometimes even Curmudgeonly Fun … to notice what’s wrong with the way we celebrate the season.   But TwoIf we take time to notice, the spirit of the season is there for the taking, whether it’s in commercials or in the people around us.  We get to choose.

What’s your favorite holiday commercial?  Oh, yeah.  If you enjoyed this post, push my button … gently … to make me Number One on Top Sites Tuesday #181.

I had never seen any of those….perhaps I should start watching more commercials. I really enjoyed all three. I would be inspired to go out and buy from those retailers just because they handled their commercials so well. Actually, I would buy Diet Coke if they had the world’s tackiest commercials….Diet Coke addition is a real addiction. Great post!!

    Hi Bud,

I really liked the coke commercial. Coca-cola always seems to have great commercials around this time of year.
