Monday Smiles – 11/24/2014
When this posts tomorrow, my wife Muri and I will be on the 91 Freeway, East bound. We will pick up the 60 Freeway outside of Riverside and after a pleasant drive through the foothills of the San Jacinto Mountains, we will pick up Interstate 10 and stay on it FOREVER. Well, actually, we will stay on it for about six hours. We will pass through Palm Springs and the incredibly odd sight of the windmills spinning in the prevailing desert winds. As civilization slips away, we’ll head through the desert to the California border town of Blythe and the Arizona border town of Quartzsite, two towns we’d likely never visit if we didn’t need lunch or gas. OK, Quartzsite has a pretty cool rock and mineral shop. From Quartzsite, we venture off into what I like to call the MFN, the Middle of Freakin’ Nowhere for about three hours until the suburbs of Phoenix come into sight. And from there it’s about an hour and a half to Our Little House in the Desert in San Tan Valley. We are home in our home away from home.
It is a lovely little house that we bought when our daughter and her husband moved to Mesa over ten years ago. It is right on the golf course with a sunset view of the San Tan Mountains. But that’s not what makes it our home away from home. What makes it a home is the grandkids that come to visit, three little sometimes-angels who call it Nana’s and Papa’s Little House. Tuesday, we’ll go to see Maddux in at school and Wednesday, we’ll go to a Thanksgiving party in Savannah’s class. Thursday we’ll spend Thanksgiving at my daughter’s house, tehn take kids back to our house for a couple of nights. By the weekend, we’ll be exhausted and happy. Talk about things to be thankful for. So, it’s Monday. I’m looking forward and smiling.
