dial phoneIn the little ranch style house I grew up in in East Haven Connecticut, there was one phone.  It looked like this one, a masterpiece of efficient electro-mechanical machinery, weighing about 2 pounds.  By placing your finger in the hole of the number you wished to dial, rotating the dial until your finger was against the stopper, then releasing it, the internal mechanism would generate that number of pulses and sent them out on the phone line.  I think that phone rang two or three times a day, always answered by my Mom.   It was usually a call from a friend or family, but occasionally it would be a business inquiry from an establishment where my parents did business.  There was a small pad next to the phone for messages in case the call was for someone that wasn’t home. Late but Cranky

curmudgeonOK.  You were warned.  In writing about my holiday good cheer while Holiday Shopping, I told you I keep my Inner Curmudgeon locked in the basement during December and that by the time I let my Inner Curmudgeon out in early January, he’s pissed.  When I opened his cage door on New Years Day, he reminded me that I didn’t even let him rant about our least favorite holiday commercials.  So, before I head out into the world today, I’m going to let him have his rant.  Perhaps if he lets off some steam, he won’t get me into a fist fight in the park with some helicopter Mom who’s letting her child throw rocks at my ducks. Who’s Teaching Whom?

October 23, 2010

OK, I’ll admit it.  The original title of this post was Who’s Teaching Who? My first impulse is not always grammatically correct, you see.   In fact, I prefer the sound of Who’s Teaching Who? but given the subject matter of the post … as you’ll see shortly … I figured I’d better opt for the correct usagewho as the subject of a sentence and whom as the object of a verb or preposition.   Does anyone diagram sentences anymore?  No. (more…)

Phone Moms

July 31, 2009

Today while I was sitting by the lake in the park doing my Morning Pages, a pack of small children came by on miniature two-wheeled bicycles, each wearing the required-by-CA-law helmets that make them look like some sort of mobile mushroom.   They were accompanied by two well-dressed mothers, each chattering away on her cell phone, presumably not to each other.
