Random

Listening in on conversations out in the real world lately, I notice people … particularly younger people … using the phrase, That’s so random.  As in …

Heather: Johnny showed up late to class today with the wrong homework assignment.
Lindsey: Oh, That’s so random!

Even with several degrees spent trying to understand exactly what random means from a scientific and mathematical perspective, I have no idea what Lindsey means.  And as a lover of words well-used, this kind of slang drives me crazy.  Yeah, yeah, I know … I probably contributed to cool meaning more than the temperature inside the refrigerator and ball meaning, well, you know, as in Good Golly Miss Molly, sure like to ball … but that was then and this is now.  According to the Urban Dictionary So Random can mean Anything that truly does not make any sense of any kind whatsoever or seems dreadfully out of place, usually in a comic light or something completely stupid.  The BioLogos Forum says, When used by people of my generation, the word “random” can simply mean “cool” or “surprising.” My Mathematical Theory of Statistics professor must have missed these particular nuances of random. So, it’s Top Sites Tuesday #71 with the theme Two Thoughts on Tuesday and I bring you two random thoughts … as in, thoughts with no particular connection or order.

Random Thought #1: Last night at 11:30 pm I was happily finishing my Monday Smiles post when a 130 decibel shriek practically knocked me out of my chair.   Why is it that smoke alarms always malfunction in the middle of the night? Every website I consulted last night to try to determine what might be wrong … and every person I talked to today … mentioned night time false alarms. Now, speaking of random, you would certainly expect that smoke alarm malfunctions would be equally likely at any time of the day.  But as far as I can tell, they’re not.  Go figure.  As an aside, once again, the internet saved the day, providing me with the manual for the particular units that came with our house and instructions for cleaning them.  Tonight, so far so good but the night is young.

Random Thought #2:  Have you ever had moments when you’re in a place you’ve been many times but feel as if you’re seeing it for the first time … or maybe with new eyes?  I’ve always loved the drive up to our house at night, the lights from the houses twinkling like stars in the rolling hills and tonight, driving back from Home Depot, I was back to the night we moved in, almost not believing that we could live here.   It’s not the first time or the first place this has happened.  It’s a slightly unsettling feeling, as if I’ve detached a bit from my own reality, but mostly, it’s a pleasant step back in time.  Just thought I’d ask.  Don’t tell me I’m crazy, OK?

So, there you  go.  Two truly random thoughts.  If you enjoyed them … or found them cool or surprising … push my button … gently … to make me Number One on Top Sites Tuesday #71.

I had the same thing happen to me at 2:00am and I jumped out of bed. My smoke alarm is right next to my bed high on the wall. Let me tell you it is really loud. It did not last long only a minute or so and then it stopped so I went back to bed and started to fall back asleep. Well, it went off again about a half an hour latter, scaring the _____

Then I decided to change the battery and it did not go off again. Thank God!

Yes, I have had the experience of going home and thinking that it was so beautiful as if I had never been there before, just like I was seeing it for the first time. Well, what happened was I was seeing it in a different way that I had never seen before. So you are not crazy. I think it is wonderful that you enjoyed seeing how beautiful where you live is and appreciating it all over again.

  3. Couldn’t agree with you more, Bud..on all three thoughts! But that smoke alarm business..like you (and Angelbaby) had the same thing happen, clear out of the blue and, every time, we continue to hunt around “just in case”, only to find nothing. I think they are being built with a sick sense of humour and if I had my dogs’ hearing, possibly hear a snigger or two. Can relate to your last thought in a slightly different manner. Being an immigrant, I’d love it when my Mum or other family would come visit me in whichever part of the US I was living at the time…and usually a year or so after I’d moved there. By then I was so accustomed to the sights and sounds possibly I took it all for granted..or even slightly jaded…and when they’d arrive that’s what I would say…”I get to see it through different eyes”. Like that commecial for Corn Flakes (when one hasn’t had them for a long time!)..”Like the first time all over again!” BTW…I’m loving your blogs Bud…may I put your link on mine? Clicks for you!

Yeah, I too have experienced the lovely alarm going off in the middle of the night. ADT didn’t like the call they got from me that night I assure you!

  7. Haven’t had that happen with the smoke detector -not yet, anyway -but the horn on my car has a tendency to go off and always seems to do that in the wee hours of the morning. (Son-in-law “corrected” that problem by disconnecting the horn. Sigh. Just made a new problem, me thinks.)
But the seeing of the old and familiar with what seems to be in a new light -happened to me yesterday as my daughter and I were returning home from Pittsburgh, driving along Interstate 80, past the forested area to the west of us -a drive I’ve made many, many times -and this time, it seemed different. Not that I haven’t appreciated the beauty of this drive before but yesterday, it just seemed so much more special and brought to my mind that old hymn “For the Beauty of the Earth” which then became an earworm for the rest of the drive home. Funny how things like that happen, isn’t it?

I find when driving that things in familiar places tend to look slightly different each time I see them. You’re not alone.
